Routines Do Matter for Childhood Obesity
Many parents have been scared by this new epidemic that America faces. This epidemic is known as childhood obesity. With this, many parents wonder just what they can do to prevent this from happening to their children. A recent study done however has shown that there are three routines implemented daily in the home that have been linked to helping to reduce childhood obesity.
The first thing that researchers have found to be beneficial in helping to reduce childhood obesity is to have family meals. This means sit down together at a table and eat a meal together. This way you can watch what your children eat and drink at dinner time. Too often, children are left to either prepare their own meals or parents partake in almost every night, giving them fast food for dinner. They sit in other rooms or eat at different times, so many children are not getting enough fruits and vegetables and other forms of nutrients that are needed. The next thing that researchers have linked to childhood obesity is sleep deprivation or not getting enough sleep. This is because when children or anyone don't get enough sleep, then this messes up ones metabolism. This could make a definite impact on your child. As the child loses more and more sleep, the metabolism gets slower and slower. So, that fat isn't burned as fast. The other thing and last thing that has an impact on a child is how active they are. What used to be a decade ago where children were all so active in sports and other things isn't so much the issue any longer. The third thing that we are about to mention goes along with metabolism as well. This third routine that parents can implement in the home is limiting how much television their children watch. The more they sit on the couch, the slower their metabolism is going to be. Think about how slow your child's metabolism will be when there are double the chances of having it slowed. Think about that as you keep them up late at night or you give them that extra hour in front of the television. When this happens and these routines aren't followed, researchers have found that these are the three most impactful things that parents can do. For when they aren't followed, it doubles and sometimes triples the likeliness that your child will be obese. While schools are doing what they can to help the children, they are asking parents to also help. This is because they are seeing the social and the physical impact on obese children. It's not a pretty sight. Do something for them. This is a start on some of the things that you as a parent can do in your home to help your child from facing the woes of childhood obesity. So, as a recap, sit down for dinner, get them to bed at a decent time, and limit the tube and you are well on your way to helping your children over come being a likelihood of this epidemic. |
