What is the link between muscle and metabolism?
The muscle and metabolism are inter-related and are often used in the fitness regimen. This is because if the body wants to lose weight it can be hastened by building your muscle. The more the muscle you build, the faster the amount of calories you burn for energy. This accelerates the process of burning unwanted stored fat in the body by using muscle as the fastest source for energy. This increasingly burns fat and also burns the muscle in order to increase your metabolism. Metabolism is the rate at which your body burns calories and it is completely dependent upon the muscle mass. Generally burning calories does not mean completely depleting the calorie stores but it means a caloric energy that your body converts the food which is stored in the form of chemical into a heat by using for fuel or any mechanical form that is expelled for energy.
Metabolism depends on the amount of muscle you have. The higher the muscle you have, more the energy is processed by muscle which increases the fat burning process and also metabolism too. For instance, males have more muscle than females and hence have higher metabolic rate than females. Also metabolism is age dependent as it is higher in a young person when compared to an elderly person and so on.
Most of the overweight people rely on a low calorie diet and follow an intense work out session, this not only burns fat, but also rapidly burns the muscle too which statistically lowers the metabolic rate. One of the research studies has also confirmed that by consuming only low calorie food has indeed slowed down the metabolic rate which led to lesser amount of weight loss. As the lesser we eat, the muscle weight reduces and the body stores fat to derive energy by piling up the extra calories. So, it is important to consume a balanced diet which is rich in nutrients as it helps you in building the muscle which increases the metabolism and thus hastens weight loss.
The best way to increase your metabolism which promotes rapid weight loss is by building your muscle which has a higher metabolic rate in the body and stimulates burning up of more calories. You can build the muscle by physical exercises such as intense work outs, brisk walking, and aerobics, tread mill exercise, jogging, weight lifting, martial arts etc. The more the energy you use, the faster the muscle you grow in bulk which increases burning up of calories by increasing metabolism. This process best works when you are on a balanced diet as it helps you to keep up with the muscle growth by targeting the stored fat as fuel for the expenditure of energy. This is good if you are overweight as more the extra muscle you build the more the extra calories your body can burn. Hence you can burn 500 calories per day doing nothing if you build around 10 pounds of muscles which elevate your metabolism resulting in rapid weight loss in a short duration of time. As well as making sure that your body metabolism reduces too as you lose weight. This is because the body carries lesser amount of calories and lesser muscle in a normal weight person and the body requirements are met by consuming lesser quantity of food as it would be more than adequate amount. So you need not work hard to manage weight as you did in the past as you eat lesser calories than before and it gets burnt by daily core activities which are more than enough to manage your weight.
Also in case if you were on a crashed diet for temporary weight loss, you need not panic if you start gaining weight. You can reverse the weight gaining process by taking a balanced diet and performing intense exercises which help you build the muscle and maintain your weight. In this way you can stop the weight gain caused by fad diets which will help your body to metabolize rapidly through muscle which burns the fat and unwanted excess calories thus helping you to achieve normal weight and its management.
In conclusion, losing weight in a healthy way is often associated with building muscle in the body which burns calories as well as increases the body metabolism. Hence muscle and metabolism are important to achieve a normal weight in order to maintain the physiological balance in our body.
